In a field one summer’s day a Grasshopper was hopping about, chirping and singing to its heart’s content. (วันหนึ่งในฤดูร้อน ตั๊กแตนตัวหนึ่งกำลังสนุกสนานร่าเริงใจกับการร้องรำทำเพลง )
An Ant passed by, bearing along with great toil an ear of corn he was taking to the nest. ( พวกมดได้เดินผ่านมาด้วยท่าทางที่ขยันขันแข็ง พวกมันกำลังขนข้าวโพดไปเก็บสะสมที่รัง)
“Why not come and chat with me,” said the Grasshopper, “instead of toiling and moiling in that way?” (“ ทำไมพวกเจ้าไม่มาสนุกกับข้าก่อนล่ะ ” เจ้าตั๊กแตนพูด , “แทนที่จะต้องมาเหน็ดเหนื่อยกับการทำงานหนักอยู่อย่างนี้”)
“I am helping to lay up food for the winter,” said the Ant, “and recommend you to do the same. ( “ พวกข้ากำลังช่วยกันเก็บสะสมอาหารเพื่อเป็นเสบียงไว้กินในยามหน้าหนาว ” มดพูด “ และขอแนะนำให้เจ้าทำเช่นเดียวกับที่พวกข้าทำ”)
“Why bother about winter?” said the Grasshopper,” we have got plenty of food at present. (“ ทำไมจะต้องกังวลกับฤดูหนาว ” ตั๊กแตนพูด , “ ในเมื่อตอนนี้พวกเรายังมีอาหารอีกตั้งเยอะ ”)
But the Ant went on its way and continued its toil. ( แต่พวกมดก็ไม่ได้สนใจ ยังคงช่วยกันเก็บหาอาหารต่อไป )
When the winter came the Grasshopper had no food and found itself dying of hunger,( เมื่อฤดูหนาวมาถึงตั๊กแตนไม่สามารถหาอาหารกินได้ และมันได้รู้ว่า ขณะนี้มันกำลังจะตายด้วยความหิวนั้น )
